As a consultant working in the NHS you want to make sure you’ve got protection that’s as unique as you are. With the world’s largest medicolegal team and the greatest reserves of any defence organisation, we’re here to protect your finances and your reputation.
With all your protection under one roof – from medicolegal experts to case handlers – you can be confident you’ve got the all-inclusive support you need. Plus, you can be sure we value your membership and the fact you’re renewing with us.
Unlike some other providers, our protection doesn’t stop when you retire or stop practising. You, your family and your estate have the right to request indemnity for future claims arising from any year during which you were a Medical Protection member.
Our protection for NHS consultants goes above and beyond the NHS scheme that only covers damages from negligence claims.
Membership provides you with the right to request assistance for cases arising in a range of different situations. If your clinical practice is called into question by your employer, the GMC or others you have the right to request our assistance. Our experts are always there, ready to provide you with support when you need us.

If you're thinking about a move into private practice, there are lots of things you need to consider. We've put some resources together to help you feel confident in a new field.
When you’re working in an NHS hospital your clinical negligence indemnity is provided through an NHS scheme. But NHS indemnity does not cover doctors working in general practice in Northern Ireland. This means you will notice an increase in your subscription rate once you start your second year of training as this will include at least one GP post.
You can claim back any membership costs which exceed £48 (the rate you would be paying in a hospital post) from the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA).
You will need a reimbursement letter from us as evidence for your expenses claim with NIMDTA. Please contact Member Services to get a copy of this letter.
Subscriptions are reimbursed by NIMDTA in full, but you have the option of either paying Medical Protection in full or spreading your payment across ten monthly instalments at no extra cost.
It is important to check your details as any missing or inaccurate information could affect your right to request assistance and in some circumstances can result in your membership being cancelled.
You'll notice a few things have changed on our website. After asking our members what they want in an online platform, we've made it easier to access our membership benefits and created a more personalised user experience.
